5 Health Snack Alternatives

Posted: September 14th, 2011 by George » Talk: No comments yet

You’re always on the go and may not have time to come home and cook every night – I get it! But the mistake many busy Americans’ make is rushing through the unhealthiest fast-food drives. There are nutritious alternatives to fast service rather than a quick quarter-pounder and 5-piece nugget. Here is my list of New Jersey’s 5 healthiest fast-food stops:

Muscle Maker Grill – You see the Jersey shore cast members frequently dine here, because it offers the same quick, convenient benefits of fast food, but without all of the unwanted fats, oils and carbohydrates. The menu offers healthy alternatives of American, Asian, Cajun, Italian, Mexican and Southwestern dishes.

Energy Kitchen – Has a menu full of tasty high-protein, high-fiber meals and smoothies that are all made within minutes. Most of these fantastic fast-food locations are in Manhattan, but they are quickly spreading to the garden state including the opening of the Hoboken location (96 Hudson Street).

Panera Bread – Provides healthy soup, salad and sandwich combos. For the kids: try squeezable organic yogurt, PB&J (with all-natural peanut butter), and grilled organic cheese on white whole-grain bread. Yum!

Au Bon Pain – Quickly serves up sandwiches, low-cal soups, salads, and hot entrees made with whole grains, veggies, and hormone-free chicken. Au Bon Pain also provides on-site nutritional information via computer kiosks.

Professional golfers rounding into shape

"Golf: The perfect way to spoil a good walk."

Golf: It used to be a leisurely game for recreation purposes and building client relations. Now, it’s becoming more of a fitness competition. Every major tournament including The Masters, The PGA Championship, The British Open and the US Open have all had a young, fit tournament champion.

Gone are the days of the unhealthy tournament winners like Phil Mickelson (beer belly!) or John Daly (smoker and beer belly!). Golf is now evolving into a sport that requires higher fitness levels – not just free time spent on the course.

Golf seems to be more of a “sport” based on endurance, power, strength and stability rather than just a game these days. Gary Player started the trend and Tiger Woods took it to the level of perfection. During Tiger’s day he hit the ball further and usually more accurately by implementing high intensity strength training. Tiger works out while he is on tour, now, if he could just get his life back in swing.

These days, pro-golfers are younger, stronger and true athletes. The 25-year-old winner of the PGA Championship, Keegan Bradley, Masters winner Charl Schwartzel, and US Open winner Rory Mcllroy are perfect examples of young, powerful golf champions that could likely double as athletes on any other pitch due to their superior fitness.

In my industry, I am seeing 14-year-old kids that are doing explosive exercises to increase swing speed, and plyometric exercises to improve power – we certainly didn’t see this 20 years ago. Golf used to be a recreational hobby to bring friends and co-workers together over a few swings (and beers). Today, we see golfers training for the game at a very young age, and at extremely high fitness levels! I am going to make a prediction that the winner of the FedEx Cup will be young, fit and powerful. Sorry Mickelson!

PPTS Wellness training Badwater Ultramarathon runners!

Posted: July 10th, 2011 by George » Talk: No comments yet

PPTS Wellness and running specialist Kenley Ferrara are proud to be a part of the 34th anniversary Badwater Ultramarathon, known globally as “the world’s toughest foot race,” on July 11-13, 2011. A true “challenge of the champions,” this legendary race pits 90 of the world’s toughest athletes from 18 countries and 25 American states – runners, triathletes, adventure racers, and mountaineers – against one another and the elements. Covering 135 miles, non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, CA in temperatures up to 130F,, it is the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet.

The start line is at Badwater, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in the Western Hemisphere at 280 feet below sea level. The race finishes at Mt. Whitney Portal at 8,360 feet. The Badwater course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 13,000 feet of cumulative vertical ascent and 4,700 feet of cumulative descent. The Portal is the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States.

PPTS Wellness have trained Pam Reed to endure and hopefully win this event. Everything from posture, stabilization, strength and injuries were assessed and improved throughout the past 10 months. We wish Pam Reed the best of luck, she swears she is going to give 150%! Go Pam! I’d like to also wish local runners Amy Palmiero Winters of Hicksville, Long Island, Anthony Portera of White Plains, and Brittany Klimowicz from Astoria, NY the best of luck.

Register now for Summer 2011 Adult Recess Class

Posted: July 10th, 2011 by George » Talk: No comments yet

Remember how much fun recess was as a kid?

It was such a great chance to blow off some steam, run around with your friends and forget about school for a few precious minutes. We’ve lost the concept of recess as we’ve grown up (This is too bad because we all probably really need that break in the day now more than ever).

Sometimes our idea of unwinding is by doing work (to get ahead, finish a deadline, etc.), eating our favorite meal or snacks, or lying on the couch to watch a show that really piques our interest (sometimes while eating our favorite snacks). As tempting as it is to eat chips while watching Jersey Shore, exercising or being around friends may be a better way to unwind.

Whether in the morning, noon or night, the next time you take a break from your day, make sure to incorporate a more “recess” approach and you may find that you’re happier and healthier because of it.
PPTS is currently accepting new participants for the Wednesday evening Adult Recess Class held in Weehawken at 8pm. Recess activities such as Tag, Boxing (yes I know we didn’t usually box during recess but we do it in class), dodge ball, football are performed. All this along with a complete strength and conditioning workout.

Space is limited so sign up soon, Email george@pptswellness.com for more information.
